MEET KARIN LAZARUS
Owner of Sweet Mary Jane Bakery in Boulder, Colorado.
A creative, savvy, driven New Yorker and dear friend of BHC.
Just recently we got to sit down with our dear friend and client of The Collective, Karin Lazarus. She not only owns the most amazing speciality bakery in Boulder, Sweet Mary Jane’s Bakery, but she’s also the most fabulous, worldly and relatable women we get to spend time with.

Q: IF WE ARE TO SUMMARIZE IN 3 WORDS, WHO YOU ARE AND OR, HOW YOU IDENTIFY IN YOUR LIFE TODAY? WHAT WOULD THOSE 3 WORDS BE?
KARIN: I identify as being very brave, passionate, and ambitious.
Q: WHY BOULDER? WHEN DID YOU GET HERE? AND HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN?
KARIN: I was born and raised in New York. I, then, moved to the Caribbean and I loved life there, but felt it wasn’t the best place for raising a child. I was familiar with Boulder from past travels, and truly felt like this is the place for me. It’s ideal in many ways - it’s’ easy, beautiful, and has such a soothing effect on my soul. I decided to take a leap of faith, and it paid off.
Q: WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE A LEADER AND A WOMAN IN YOUR SPACE?
KARIN: I believe that a great female leader seeks and receives support - & knows no one can do it alone. They mentor other women to help them achieve their own goals. Leaders give to others, including themselves, as a sense of hope and inspiration. They are optimistic, and confident. A woman in leadership knows to never give up. I am so fortunate to have been able to start, and continue a business that is successful and near to my heart. As a woman and a leader, it’s my passion to create a space that is safe and inclusive to all. I curate my team with diversity - it’s very important to me.
Q: WITH BOULDER HAIR COLLECTIVE BEING OUR COMMON DENOMINATOR HERE, BEAUTY AND SELF-CARE IS CLEARLY A PRIORITY OF YOURS. FOR OUR READERS, WHAT BEAUTY ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?
KARIN: I grew up in New York and I was used to high end and luxury salons. It took me some time to find my stylist,Trey. Once I did, I knew he was ‘The One’ for my hair journey. Personally for me, finding a stylist who cares, listens, and also offers guidance - whether hair or real life is what I would advise. Trey is truly a master of his craft from cutting to color. I also find my values of caring for the planet alighting with Boulder Hair Collective, and I love having good conscience beauty.
Q: DESCRIBE YOUR HAIR NEEDS OR PRODUCTS YOU USE?
KARIN: My weekly routine usually is washing my hair every couple of days, using great product, and using hot rollers when I need a more styled look.
Q: WHAT’S A NIGHT OUT IN BOULDER LIKE FOR YOU?
KARIN: A night out for me, in Boulder, looks like being surrounded by loved ones, great food, and conversation. It’s not about the setting or place, I find my satisfaction through people and the food. If I am staying in - my favorite thing is being a hostess. I take the time to create a curated menu, and feed those that I love and care for dearly. I pour the essence of myself into the food with love and tender care.
